Advanced Genetics

The Chimney Rock Hemp Seed Collection

High CBD, Full-Spectrum Feminized Seeds

By focusing on farmer success instead of just slinging open-source seeds we are developing hemp varietals that are naturally high in full-spectrum cannabinoids while also locally adapted to regional climates and pests. Our Farmer and Grower Members are actually part of our R&D program, as affiliate growers, and share the benefit from new strains developed and sold locally.
We offer Master Grower level training for all our Farmer and Grower partners sharing Reference Guides and Standard Operating Procedures developed over five years to accelerate their Time-to-Profitability.

Hemp Genetics: Co-developing Indica and Sativa Hybrids

Chimney Rock Farms is revolutionizing the way high CBD genetic research and breeding is being done. We guarantee our premium feminized hemp seeds will exceed your expectations because we work with our Member Growers to hand-select the best phenotypes of our genetics within their region.
Breeding Intent
We believe there is a lot of good work being done in hemp today: we applaud and celebrate our fellow breeders and welcome them to join us. We wish team up with some of the best breeders and growers in the world to create exceptional hemp strains for our Farmer Members and the market. Interested?

Co-Development and consistency
Full-spectrum Nutraceutical makers are discovering the benefits of formulation intended breeding. By controlling quality at the plant instead of the back end of extraction /distillation process we can significantly reduce costs while guaranteeing cannabinoid consistency and quality.
Go-to-market
Chimney Rock Farms trials new strains from many partners. Promising strains are given a development priority in our research and we work with our Member Partners to then regionalize the strain. We can do royalty splits, seed purchase credits or jointly pursue the patent process. Chimney Rock Farms will nationally brand and market the new strains to accelerate market acceptance and penetration.

Feminized Hemp Seeds: Breeding Variety Development and Trials

From start to completion hemp variety development can take several years to complete involving 8 key steps:
Picture
Step One: Discovery
Each year the we scour breeding houses large and small in the US and abroad for new Cannabis genetics worth investigating. We also generate new breeding material through hybrid swarm and mutation techniques. These methods introduce a variety of novel genetics into our program that may lead to elite hemp varieties.

Step 2: Screening
These varieties are then screened for phenotypes with specific Cannabinoid levels, terpene profiles, and agronomic  traits like vigor and pest resistance to identify elite candidates. Selected phenotypes may be kept alive indefinitely, allowing us to reproduce a given result year after year, or integrate novel genetics into elite varieties already developed.

Step Three: Genotype selection
When promising phenotypes are identified, they are genotyped and entered into our genetic database. Using this information we select genetically distant (dissimilar) lines for breeding work, as this factor tends to produce hybrids exhibiting the most heterosis, or hybrid vigor, ensuring farmers the most vigorous and high yielding varieties available. Having this information also speeds up the breeding process, enabling us to bring new varieties to market much more quickly than traditional breeding methods.

Step Four: Experimental Breeding
Selected genotypes are then crossed in a controlled environment through hand pollination. Each year, dozens of experimental hybrids are created this way in our greenhouses.

Step Five: Establishing evaluation priority
In late winter our teams and partners meet to discuss trial goals for the upcoming season. The Sales Team provides vital information about emerging trends, customer feedback, and top-performing varieties. The Product Development team reviews results from farmer surveys. The 2019 hemp farmer
survey is available by  email at survey@chimneyrockhemp.com. The Trial Team works with our Grower Partners and the Breeding Team to develop a list of specific varieties to be grown on the CRF Research Farm as well as our Partners research plots that season. They also produce a list of key attributes they are seeking, for example, CBD yield, early flowering time, pest resistance, or other Cannabinoid yields (e.g. CBG).

Step Six: Field Trials
The CRF Trial Team and our Grower Partner Farms around the country grow samples of our experimental varieties alongside CRF flagship strains as “checks” comparing commercial hemp varieties from other seed companies in a variety of locations and climates. While most trials look solely at productivity under standard cultivation regimes, some trials add additional variables, such as alternative tillage or planting dates/densities.

Step Seven: Evaluation & Analysis
After harvest testing is complete, the data is analyzed and the Teams meets to evaluate our varieties. Sometimes, a new hybrid performs so well in trials that it is released commercially. Most of the time, though, decisions are not so clear-cut. A proposed new variety might have some advantage over a current variety, but not be overwhelmingly superior. Or it may have performed well in some locations but not others. In such cases it is added to the list of varieties to re-trial. With few exceptions, most CRF varieties will be trialed in two or more seasons before they are released commercially.

Step Eight: Final Decisions | Seed Production
Finally, by November, the decisions have been made, the catalog descriptions written, seed production plan in place to produce three crops of feminized seed between December and May, when seeds are delivered to customers and Grower Partners, who will produce seedlings for sale in late May/early June to farmers in their regions.

This ensures our varieties represent the best available hemp genetics in the market.
