Marijuana has served humans for thousands of years. Trace amounts have been found in tombs around the world suggesting we valued it enough to carry it to the far regions of the earth. It is likely we evolved together breeding marijuana to feed, shelter and heal us.
Farming hemp (the non-psychoactive strain of marijuana) will be a new chapter in this story. Research is underway now to understand why the human brain actually contains cannabinoid receptors and how our bodies produce many of the same molecules found in marijuana. We may soon find out that the normal regulation of our bodies and brains evolved long ago with marijuana to manage things like inflammation, pain, and stress. Learn how we are rediscovering the value of this amazing plant and the role it may play treating diseases like Cancer, Lupus, Crohn's Disease, and Epilepsy.*
At Chimney Rock Farms we believe our mission is to bring hemp back to help small and mid size farmers become profitable so they can, in time, re-localize our food system. Our part in this story is to research and develop farming systems that allow food and hemp to be farmed profitably. Once small and mid size farmers have access to a local, profitable crop they will begin to thrive again. We believe they will find hemp to be superior to most commodity crops that have trapped many large farmers while locking out the majority of small to midsize farmers from our current industrial food system.
We know, first hand, how large scale, mono-crop farming is riddled with unintended consequences such as soil erosion, air and water pollution, addictive dependency on fossil fuels and ultimately the terrible price we pay for our national health. The end of this story may be that we finally come to understand how incredibly useful this plant was so once again farmers come back to the land to feed us. At Chimney Rock Farms we are researching ways to use hemp to restore our soils, provide habitat for animals, give bees a break, power our tractors, pump our water, generate electricity and of course, help to alleviate pain and suffering.*
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a special type of molecule, known as a cannabinoid, which is found in plants including Flax, Azaleas and Cannabis/Industrial Hemp. The United States Department of Health and Human Services actually holds patent 6,630,507 titled ‘Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants.’ In this patent, the authors claim that:
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia.
Cannabidiol has been studied as an antiepileptic (Carlini et al., J. Clin. Pharmacol. 21:417S-427S, 1981; Karler et al., J. Clin. Pharmacol. 21:437S-448S, 1981, Consroe et al., J. Clin Phannacol. 21:428S-436S, 1981).
